Sawda bint Zam'a

Sawda bint Zam’ah bin Qays al-Qurashiyah al-‘Amiriyah was one of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the first woman he married after the death of Khadijah bint Khuwaylid (may Allah be pleased with her). Sawda (may Allah be pleased with her) was a widow when the Prophet proposed to her, following the passing of her husband, al-Sakran bin Amr, who had embraced Islam with her in Mecca. They had both migrated to Abyssinia to escape the persecution of the Quraysh against the Muslims.

After her husband's death, the Prophet married her to protect and support her, and she became a model of loyalty and integrity. He married her in the tenth year of the Prophethood, and she lived with him in a simple, humble life, known for her kindness, generosity, and pure-hearted nature.

Sawda was known for her lightheartedness and sense of humor, and she shared a positive relationship with the other Mothers of the Believers. She demonstrated her love for the Prophet and her solidarity with him in his mission.

Sawda bint Zam’ah has a several inspiring stories about Sawda bint Zam’ah, illustrating her devotion, humor, and sacrifices in the early Muslim community. Here are some notable stories:

  • Her Sacrifice and Selflessness for Aisha: One of the most inspiring stories of Sawda’s character is her decision to give up her time with the Prophet for Aisha. As Sawda grew older, she noticed the Prophet’s affection for Aisha and, out of love and consideration for him, she willingly offered her time to Aisha. This generous act demonstrated her selflessness, deep empathy, and understanding, putting the Prophet’s happiness above her own.
  • Her Strong Faith and Support of the Prophet: Sawda’s steadfast faith was evident from the start of her marriage to the Prophet. Despite the hardships Muslims faced in Mecca, she remained unwavering in her support for the Prophet’s mission. After the death of her first husband, who was also a Muslim, Sawda chose to continue her path in Islam and was ready to face any challenges, showing her strength and commitment to her faith.
  • Her Humor and Positive Nature: Sawda was known for her lightheartedness and sense of humor, which brought comfort and joy to the Prophet’s household. In one story, she joked with the Prophet about her age, bringing laughter into a household often burdened by the weight of the mission. This positivity and ability to uplift those around her were key aspects of her personality.
  • Her Role in the Early Muslim Community: Sawda’s marriage to the Prophet was also a strategic and compassionate act, as she was a widow without family support after her husband’s death. The Prophet’s marriage to her provided her with security and affirmed her place in the community, where she continued to contribute through her wisdom, generosity, and support for others. She embodied resilience and demonstrated the Prophet’s principle of compassion toward vulnerable members of society.

These stories illustrate Sawda’s remarkable character—her humor, faith, empathy, and selflessness—which inspired others and strengthened the unity and spirit within the early Muslim community.
