 Safiyya bint Huyayy

Safiyyah bint Huyayy ibn Akhtab, may Allah be pleased with her, was one of the Mothers of the Believers and a wife of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. She belonged to the Banu Nadir tribe and was the daughter of their leader, Huyayy ibn Akhtab. She was of Jewish origin before embracing Islam and married the Prophet ﷺ after the Battle of Khaybar.

Born into a household of nobility and honor, Safiyyah grew up under the care of her father, a prominent leader among his people. She was known for her beauty, intelligence, and broad knowledge. Before her conversion to Islam, she was married twice, her last husband being Kinana ibn al-Rabi’, who was killed in the Battle of Khaybar.

Conversion to Islam and Marriage to the Prophet ﷺ: After the Muslim victory at Khaybar in the 7th year of Hijrah, Safiyyah was taken among the captives. When the Prophet ﷺ learned of her noble status, he freed her and married her, honoring her position and aiming to soften the hearts of the Jewish tribes toward Islam. Despite the hardships of losing her family and people, Safiyyah displayed great forgiveness and became one of the loyal companions of the Islamic call.

Life with the Prophet ﷺ: Safiyyah lived with the Prophet ﷺ in an atmosphere of respect and affection. She was a model of a pious wife, combining wisdom and kindness, and patiently handling challenges with grace.
